Love them or hate them, polka dots never go out of fashion. This fun, playful and retro print cheers me up during the hot, humid summer.

Nautical stripes usually feature heavily in the summer, but polka dots were also spotted at brands such as Chloe, Sonia Rykiel and Moschino. Henry Holland also embraced the trend with his body con dress and recent collaboration with Levi's classic 501 jeans. This time round the 1950s-inspired trend was given a hefty dose of colour and came in more abstract shapes to make the look all the more modern.

If you're after basic pieces, look at Zoie (bottom) who is wearing a cute navy blue polka-dot top. The tiered design gives the blouse extra volume and details such as the little bows on the front add a youthful and fresh feel to the look. To up the style ante, she is wearing a pair of loose cut denim shorts over leggings featuring an abstract print. By accessorising with beads, flower bracelet and trendy T-strap flat sandals, Zoie manages to pull off a quirky and whimsical harajuku-esque look.

Ashing's (above) outfit is less daring but equally covetable. She's embraced the trend with a lightweight spaghetti strap dress over a long, white tank top featuring embroidery at the trims. I like that the polka dots on her dress are more random, as it creates a cool optical illusion. She has gone minimal with her accessories, opting for a red Swarovski crystal pendant and a pair of metallic heels to add some edge.

Adding polka-dotted pieces to your wardrobe will update your summer look. Curvy girls should go for delicate, smaller dots. Petite figures should avoid busy prints. Instead of the usual black and white combinations, experiment with brighter shades or nautical colours.

I saw a chestnut polka-dot silk wrap blouse at BCBG (Shop 1064, Level 1, Elements, Kowloon, tel: 2196 8217) that will flatter curvy girls. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel (I.T, shop 252, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, tel: 2918 0667) has a grey polka-dot cotton dress with cap sleeves that's elegant. If you want more basic pieces, visit Beams Boy (Shop A, 42 Paterson St, Causeway Bay, tel: 2890 9177) where I saw items from tank tops to dresses. I like the black cotton dress with coloured dots from agnes b. (Shop 2A, 2-4 Kingston St, Causeway Bay, tel: 2881 9129), which is tr?s chic.
