Thanks to her diverse character roles on the show, she’s received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won two Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
But that’s not where her resume ends. Roles on shows like Netflix’s Ratched and Mrs. America, and films like Ocean’s Eight and Bird Box, have turned her into a household name.
There is more to Paulson than spooky characters and incredible acting. Here’s what you need to know about the woman behind the nightmares.
She considers herself sexually fluid
Paulson dated fellow actress Cherry Jones between 2004 and 2009. At the 2005 Tony Awards, upon winning an award, Jones was seen kissing her then-girlfriend Paulson during the broadcast.
Speaking to No Tofu about the incident, she said, “She won a Tony Award, I kissed her, and all of a sudden I was outed.” She continued, “I didn’t really think about it in that way at the time – I was just doing what one would do when a person they love has just won a big fat acting prize.”Before that she had only dated men, including former fiancé, playwright Tracy Letts, according to The New York Times. In a 2013 interview with Broadway.com, she revealed: “It’s a fluid situation for me.”5 things to know about Salma Hayek’s daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault
She’s currently in a relationship with Holland Taylor
Since 2015, Paulson has been in a relationship with fellow actress Holland Taylor.
While the 32 year age difference certainly caught everyone’s attention, the adorable couple quickly became a much-loved fixture on the red carpet.
“People look at me and Holland and say, ‘mommy issues’, but I parent her as much as she parents me, so that’s not it,” Sarah told The Sunday Times.
She has a fear of flying
As expected, a fear of flying makes her career difficult since she has to travel all over the world. To help relieve some of her anxiety before a trip, Paulson always has to talk with the pilot before any flight takes off.
“I will not fly unless they let me into the cockpit to have a little word with them before we go,” the actress revealed on The Late Night with Seth Meyers.

She’s very close with Jessica Lange
Paulson and Jessica Lange became great friends while working together on American Horror Story, but their story connection actually goes way back.
They first met in 2005 when they co-starred together in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway, and were actually catching up at an event when they reportedly bumped into AHS creator Ryan Murphy.
Paulson told Adweek Magazine, “It was the first time I had seen Ryan in many years. Jessica threw her arm around me, looked at Ryan and said, ‘Can’t you find something for Sarah to do on the show? It would be so great. I just like having her around.’”
She was quickly cast as psychic Billie Dean Howard in a few episodes, and the rest is AHS history.
She does not watch her own work any more
According to an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Paulson has not watched many of the films or shows she’s starred in, including The People v. O.J. Simpson, American Horror Story: Hotel and 2016 independent film, Blue Jay.
But it was her role as Marcia Clark in American Crime Story that prompted her to stop watching her own work.“It was the first time in my career where I really felt such an onslaught of complimentary, effusive reactions to the show itself and to my work on it, that I started to get very nervous about my typical way of watching something and ripping it to shreds when it’s my own work,” she explained.
She’s a diehard fan of The Real Housewives, but not Lisa Vanderpump
Paulson may not watch her own work, but she does watch plenty of The Real Housewives on Bravo and has appeared alongside many of the Housewives on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live.Paulson told Cohen, “I met her once at a party and she wasn’t that nice to me. Am I going to get in trouble for that? She wasn’t that nice.”
Vanderpump soon tweeted a dismissive response to a fan on Twitter: “I am sorry, not sure I know her and I don’t believe or remember meeting her … I try to be nice to everybody lol.” Ouch.

She’s gone viral
One of Paulson’s iconic lines from American Horror Story: Asylum has gone viral on TikTok. A clip of her screaming “Help! He’s escaping! The killer is escaping!” has been a hit on the app over the past few months, giving the line new life nearly a decade after it originally aired.
Memes using the soundbite first started spreading back in July, with celebrities like Billie Eilish and Lizzo using it in their posts.
